Golf

Your vacation on the Costa del Sol does not mean you must stay in Malaga or Marbella. There are a variety of award winning courses in the western section of the region. If your passion is golf, Andalucia is the best Spanish region to play.  By staying in Duquesa, you will find many of these magnificent courses on your doorstep

The unbeatable climate will allow you to play golf throughout the year. The courses are located in areas with beautiful scenery, and/or close to beaches.  There are 90 golf courses scattered around the provinces, they are maintained to an immaculate standard and offer an array of challenges so you can enjoy them whether you are a beginner, an amateur or professional.

If you have your own equipment, you can bring it; if you prefer not to, or if you do not have your own, all the courses have shops where you can hire it.

As well as offering ideal playing conditions there are spectacular backdrops to the courses whose views extend across the Mediterranean to North Africa. All these factors contribute to the rapid development of Golf courses in the area and the PGAs´ decision to host the Ryder Cup, Volvo Masters and major European Championship events.

La Duquesa Golf and Country Club

Wrapped around El Hacho beacon hill overlooking the Mediterranean to Africa.  La Duquesa is one of the most complete clubs on the coast, offerring tennis, squash, gym, sauna, jacuzzi, bowls, yacht harbour and of course golf. An 18-hole par 70 golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones. It is a demanding club with a lot of vegetation, difficult rough and large greenside bunkers, requiring concentration and straight driving. The front 9 start off eastwards then double back to finish with a long par 5. The 4th is a pretty par 4 hole which may interfere with your card! The 17th is 129 metres from tee to green but 30 metres straight down, beware of the wind! The par five 18th finishes in front of the clubhouse where the green is bordered by a large pond inhabited by ducks ad geese.

Consider planning an entire day at La Duquesa Golf and Country Club in order to experience everything the club has to offer.

Estepona Golf Course

Located 2 kilometres past Estepona, this 18 hole, par 70 course was designed by Jose Luis Lopez who adapted it to the undulating terrain. It offers a perfect opportunity to enjoy the countryside, fresh air and abundant wildlife. The course is quite up and down and some may require a buggy. The long 3rd, (the ski run) swoops downhill in a swathe of green forming seeral tiers and the unsighted drive should bear left slightly leaving a chance to reach the green with the 2nd shot. The 10th has 4 lakes and 3 bunkers guarding the green. Reasonable rates, open competitions and BBQs make the club very attractive to visitors.

Due to the high clay content in the ground the course occasionally suffers from poor drainage.

Valderrama

Everybody has heard of Valderrama “the Augusta of Europe”. The club has hosted numnerous championships, including the Volvo Masters and the 1997 Ryder cup, which saw a narrow one point European victory under the captaincy of the wonderful Spanish golfer Seve Ballesteros.

The maximum handicap allowed here is 24 for the men and 32 for the ladies. The 17th is called Los Gbiones and has much water in front of the green, leaving the decision up to you whether to lay up or go for it!

This course is primarily a private club, but visitors can play.  It is not the cheapest but because it is not overplayed the course is always in excellent condition.

The course is 6356 metres, par 71 with no hole of less than championship quality but it can be fully enjoyed by players of all handicaps, thanks to the genius of Robert Trent Jones, Senior, whom many consider the leading golf architect of his day.

From both Marbella or Algeciras turn off the N-340 at Km 131 exit marked Sotogrande-Guadiaro-Castellar.

Real Club de Golf Sotogrande

This 6224 metre par 72 course provides a stern test to the very best of golfers.

Located 20 km from Gibraltar, Robert Trent Jones designed his first European course, and it is a credit to the man and his design that the layout is still enthralling players after all these years. Sotogrande is a private members club, but still provides a warm welcome to visitors. The clubhouse is well designed and elegant, the food and drink excellent and well presented, and the changing rooms are large with showers to die for.

It is helpful to remember that most of the greens are levated and that a lot of the slopes in the fairways are very subtle, so make sure to take enough club for the distance, and then take one more.  (Their website is written in Spanish).

San Roque

Located between Jerez and Marbella, at the foothills of the Sierra Bermeja, (where the mountains meet the sea) is The San Roque Golf Club with its 2 championship golf courses. The centre piece is a magnificent mansion, formerly the home of the Domecq sherry dynasty. The Old Course (6494 metres, Par 72), was desgined by Dave Thomas and Tony Jacklin and is often rated amongst the top ten on the continent. The bunkers and fairways were recently redesigned by Seve Ballesteros to give the course a modern flair. The New Course, laid over 45 hectares, was designed by Perry Dye.  It opened in September 2003.  Visually this new course is a joy, and technically it is a masterpiece of art.  The two contrasting courses are as challenging as they are beautiful.

San Rogue offers a driving range, spa, pool, and luxurious clubhouse for golfers to enjoy when they visit.

Finca Cortesin

At almost 7,000 meters from the back tees and more than 100 bunkers Finca Cortesin is considered one of the longest and most challenging courses in Europe. The natural environment and landscape are one of it's most attractive features.  The maintenance standards of Finca Cortesin are second to none. The 5 tee positions allow players to handle the course at a more manageable 5200 metres, or 4840 metres for the ladies.
